- Coming into a 6th grade Social Studies class as a substitute teacher, the subject of the day’s class was “What is culture?” The classes sat there with those bored looks until I went to my bag and grabbed my moccasins (brought for when my feet had enough of my shoes) and my cell phone. There were quite a few gasps as I opened my cell phone (with a few “cell phones aren’t allowed in school” comments) but they were CURIOUS. I then played my ring tone (a Native American powwow song) and held up my moccasins. The next question I asked was “based on what you just saw and heard what can you tell me about the culture that I identify with?” This opened the door to wonderful discussion of the topic. This experience combined using artifacts, connecting on a personal level with students, and making the subject relevant. They were interested because I was talking about things related to me and they knew me – I was right there in front of them! I also continued with making it relevant by discussing my own observations of different cultures of refugees living in the surrounding towns. They had a much easier time internalizing “What is culture?” after my discussion with them than they did with a comparing cultures exercise based on a Junior Scholastic magazine article and graphic organizers. The teacher was grateful for my improvisation/additions to the planned lesson and the kids loved to see me in the building noting when I was displaying artifacts of my culture!!!
